Why I chose clean

Why I chose clean

Why "Clean" Isn't a Marketing Word to Me

If you've spent any time on our site, you've seen the words by now: sulphate-free, silicone-free, paraben-free. They're on every product page, every label, every email. And I want to take a moment to explain why — because to me, these aren't buzzwords picked to look good on packaging. They're the entire reason Self Centred Hair Care exists.

It Started With My Own Body

After nearly twenty years as a hairdresser, I'd worked with more product lines than I could count. I knew the industry inside out — what worked, what clients loved, what made hair look incredible under salon lighting. What I hadn't really questioned, for a long time, was what was actually in any of it.

That changed after I had my children. My skin became more sensitive. My hormones shifted in ways I wasn't expecting. And suddenly, ingredients that had never bothered me before started to. I began reading labels the way I imagine a lot of my clients never had reason to — not as a professional recommending a product, but as someone asking, quite personally, is this actually okay for me to be using on my body, every single day?

That question changed how I saw everything. And once I started asking it for myself, I couldn't stop asking it for the people sitting in my chair, either.

What "Clean" Actually Means Here

I want to be upfront about something: "clean beauty" gets thrown around a lot in this industry, often without much behind it. So when I say Self Centred is sulphate-free, silicone-free, and paraben-free, I want you to know exactly what that means and why it matters.

Sulphate-free. Sulphates are the ingredients responsible for that big, foaming lather most of us grew up associating with a "proper clean." They're effective at cutting through oil — but they can be harsh, stripping natural oils from your hair and scalp and leaving colour-treated hair fading faster than it should. We formulate without them, so your hair gets clean without that trade-off.

Silicone-free. Silicones are brilliant at one thing in particular: making hair feel instantly smooth by coating the hair shaft. The problem is, that's often a costume, not a cure — they sit on top of the hair rather than actually improving its condition underneath, and over time they can build up and weigh hair down. We wanted results that were real, not just temporary smoothness sitting on the surface.

Paraben-free. Parabens are preservatives that have raised genuine, ongoing questions around hormone disruption — questions that mattered enormously to me personally, given my own hormone changes after having children. We formulate without them, full stop.

None of this was about chasing a trend. It was about being able to look at every ingredient on our label and feel genuinely comfortable with it being there.

Why Botanicals, and Why New Zealand

The other half of this story is what we do put in, not just what we leave out. Every Self Centred formula is built around active New Zealand botanical extracts — mānuka, calendula, green tea, and OceanDerMX™ — chosen because of what they actually do for hair and scalp health, not because they sound nice on a label.

Working with a world renowned cosmetic scientist, meant every one of these ingredients had to earn its place. We weren't interested in "natural for the sake of natural." Every formula went through real iteration, real testing, and real scrutiny — because the brief I gave her from day one was non-negotiable: I wanted salon-quality performance, full stop, with nothing to apologise for in the ingredient list. Not "natural, but it doesn't quite work as well as the big brands." Just better, because we built it properly.

Working with New Zealand botanicals also meant the entire process — sourcing, formulating, manufacturing — could happen close to home, with ingredients that reflect the landscape I get to live in every day, here in Lake Hāwea.

Why It Matters to Get the Label Right

If you've ever looked closely at our ingredient lists, you'll notice every single one is fully spelled out — every botanical extract, every essential oil, every supporting ingredient, listed by its correct INCI name. That's not just a regulatory requirement here in New Zealand, though it is that too. It's something I genuinely believe in: you should be able to see exactly what you're putting on your body, in full, every time.

We've triple-checked these lists more times than I can count — cross-referencing formulas, verifying every botanical name, correcting small errors before they ever made it to print. It's tedious work, but it's the kind of tedious work I think you deserve from a brand asking to be part of your daily routine.

The Bottom Line

I'm not going to tell you that clean ingredients alone make a great hair product — performance still matters enormously, and that's exactly why Self Centred is formulated to outperform, not just to tick an ingredient checklist. But I will tell you this: you should never have to choose between a product that works and one you feel good about using.

That's the whole philosophy behind Self Centred Hair Care, in one sentence. It's the standard I hold every formula to, and it's the same standard I use on my own family.

With love from the chair, Kate Founder, Self Centred Hair Care
